As the leading independent cable advertising representation firm in the United States, Viamedia works closely with local, regional and national advertisers to provide effective media solutions ranging from advertising spots on major television networks to digital placements on mobile devices. With 70 offices, 67 partners and more than 500 sellers coast to coast, the firm delivers a full suite of turn-key digital advertising services designed to create the biggest impact among target demographics. With today’s consumer appetite for media consumption, Viamedia takes pride in offering digital advertising products that reach every audience on every screen.

The Challenge

Time is Money

With a large footprint and significant advertising dollars at play, maintaining 100% network uptime is a top priority for Viamedia. The heart of the firm’s network, more than 15 racks and their private cloud service were housed in an on-premises Network Operations Center (NOC) at their corporate office located in Lexington, Kentucky. If the connectivity were to be compromised at this location—whether through man-made or natural threats—the detrimental impact would be felt across the company. Missed advertising placements would result in lost revenue for both Viamedia and their valued clients.

“The nature of our business is dependent on uptime. As we’ve grown our footprint, gained more customers and earned new partners, it became clear that network performance and business continuity needed to be better prioritized,” said Craig Lakes, information technology director at Viamedia. “Here in Lexington, spring often brings thunderstorms and we can’t risk losing our mission-critical data and information during a power outage. Missing deadlines or time slots is simply not an option. We couldn’t take any more chances.”

The Solution

A Safety Net for Success

According to Lakes, the firm entered the market with the hopes of finding the right business continuity and disaster recovery solutions to support their network bandwidth and performance demands when the weather became unpredictable.

This was especially critical during the busy political season when advertisers were the most heavily invested. His dedicated Windstream sales representative, John Collier, responded to his plea by providing Viamedia with a mix of data center and managed services aimed to improve their network redundancy and disaster recovery procedures.

“I was there at the right place, at the right time… with the right solutions,” said John Collier, sales director at Windstream. “Viamedia wanted low latency, survivability and overall business continuity. With the field they are in, there’s big money on the line. Viamedia needed a solution to give them greater peace of mind, so Windstream provided redundant 10Gbps point to point connectivity from the Windstream data center to the firm’s headquarters with the ability to run active scenarios that no other vendor could do. With addition of colocation services, Viamedia gained a true disaster recovery and business continuity plan.”

With multiple SSAE 16, SOC 1 Type II and SOC 2 Type II compliant data centers, Windstream’s colocation facilities offer unmatched security and reliability for mission-critical applications and systems. By leveraging Windstream’s start-of-the-art NOC and advanced monitoring 24 x 7, businesses, like Viamedia, are able to focus on what matters most to them—the day-to-day activities—while Windstream’s seasoned professionals ensure uptime.

“We had been looking to add these types of off-premises solutions for quite some time. Having worked with Windstream for years, our sales representative John Collier knew exactly what we needed. John knows our business in and out and we trust him when he says he has a new technology solution for us,” mentioned Lakes.

The Result

Peace of Mind

Thanks to the introduction of Windstream’s colocation services, Viamedia is now able to keep mission-critical information private and secure. As the business continues to grow, Viamedia will be able to turn to Windstream’s Winning Team for greater availability, security and reliability and redundancy of critical data.

“Our team can access Windstream’s data center services and colocation racks at any time. We often test for different disaster recovery scenarios and each time our Windstream solutions perform. In fact, the network seamlessly transitioned during our last network outage test and our services continued to stay active; no one even detected the switch during the failover,” added Lakes.

As an extension of Viamedia’s network, Windstream’s Winning Team is taking on the responsibilities of maintaining the network infrastructure with a goal of 100% uptime, leaving Viamedia to focus on their customers’ marketing goals.
