Summer Reading Series: Assignment #4 Cloud Evangelism

By

Yes, my official title here at Windstream is indeed “Cloud Evangelist”— my job is to spread the good news about all things cloud. In order to do that effectively, I’ve got to be really exceptionally well read on cloud technologies and the news I’m spreading. Otherwise I’m just a “Cloud Repeater” or “Cloud Talker” and no one really listens to repeaters or talkers.

So where do I go for fast news and updates? Read on, fellow Cloudophiles!

Required reading: One of the most comprehensive news sources for cloud technologies is Cloud Journal. The site design is simple, the lines are clean, and since the interface is a calendar-format, I can check out stories by the date they’re published. We all need “at a glance” news, and this is definitely the spot for quick cloud updates.

I know this is nothing new to you, but it warrants a spot on my must-reads: GigaOM’s Cloud page is an endless stream of stories on one side and a “What’s Happening Now” running commentary on the right. But to be fair, GigaOM offers far more than just cloud information with a “Must Reads” section that covers the right mix of important techworld news for anyone interested in technology, not just “Cloud Evangelists”!

Reading for understanding: One of my favorite things about this job is that I often get to meet other evangelists, so I think of InformationWeek’s Cloud Commentary as an online “cloud evangelist” forum, a virtual meet-up of sorts. This resource is great, not just for its “as a service” (you know, SaaS, IaaS, etc.) pages, but also for the “insider’s view” offered to readers through the various posts and articles of industry thought leaders.

For those new to cloud technology, check out cloudnoob.com’s (great name, right?) Cloud Basics page. It’s simple, helpful and easy to read, yet manages to give the readers a “we’re all in this together” feeling. It’s not as in depth as many sites, but that’s a good thing if you’re a “cloud noob” (“newby” just in case you’re wondering).

Extra credit: I can’t help it. I’m a sucker for Cisco’s Internet of Everything— attractive, fascinating, and visionary. It takes everything we can dream of and applies technology to it all, and then does the reverse, connecting the technology of our dreams with the reality we know. Their Tomorrow Starts Here site kidnaps me for hours, so I try to make sure I’ve got some extra time before I even click that link. I’d advise you to do the same.

And then finally, IBM’s Smarter Planet, because really, who doesn’t want that? Their “Conversations” blocks, showing recent blogs and Tweets, just keeps the conversation right in front of the reader—everything is right at your fingertips.  Plus, we love helping to fulfill the vision for a smarter planet at Windstream. I’m excited to be on a team helping to lead the charge.

So there you have it cloud readers! Hope this list has given you just enough to want to learn more—or maybe even to evangelize about the cloud along with me.

About Our Summer Reading Series
This summer, Windstream bloggers are reviewing some of their favorite resources relevant to their areas of expertise—other blogs, online publications, websites, books and other resources—and sharing them with our readers and followers. Throughout the series, you’ll find great insight and links to lots of helpful resources you’ll want to read and bookmark for future reference. And of course, you can contact a Windstream advisor to learn more about products, services and cloud technologies, too.
